Turned from beech that I sourced in Cornwall following Storm Goretti.

The bowl was shaped while the wood was still green, with a smoothly turned interior and a deeply carved exterior coloured with non-toxic milk paint. As it dried, the timber moved away from the symmetry of the lathe and settled into its distinctive, softly squared form.

I see this movement as the material expressing something of its lifetime in the landscape. Every tree grows in response to its particular ground, topography and exposure to the elements. These conditions create tensions within the timber which are released as it dries, allowing the finished shape to carry part of that history.

Two visible copper mends acknowledge this movement rather than attempting to conceal it. Copper also connects the piece to Cornwall’s mining heritage and the mineral lodes running beneath the landscape.

Finished with cold-pressed raw linseed oil and non-toxic milk paint.
