To Endure
Cornish beech

Turned from beech that I sourced in Cornwall following Storm Goretti.

Perthi was shaped while the wood was still green, with a smooth exterior and an interior carved by hand. The curved tool marks follow the changing grain and gather around a branch knot held within the bowl.

As the beech dried, its circular turned form shifted into a broad, gently undulating shape. This movement releases tensions accumulated during the tree’s lifetime, allowing the finished bowl to retain something of the ground, weather and landscape in which it grew.

Natural openings around the knot and rim are held by visible copper mends. Rather than concealing these changes, the repairs become part of the piece and connect it to Cornwall’s historic copper landscape.

The exterior is coloured with non-toxic blue-green milk paint, contrasting with the warm beech within, and the whole bowl is finished with cold-pressed raw linseed oil.
