Turned from beech that I sourced in Cornwall following Storm Goretti.

Porth was shaped from green wood, then carved by hand across the inside while the exterior was left smooth. The carving catches the changing grain of the beech, creating a surface of overlapping cuts that becomes more apparent as light moves through the bowl.

As the timber dried, the bowl warped and settled into its own gently irregular form. This movement releases tensions created throughout the tree’s lifetime, allowing its final shape to carry something of the ground, weather and landscape in which it grew.

A natural opening formed as the wood moved and has been secured with a visible copper mend. The repair is intentionally left exposed, acknowledging the change within the material while connecting the piece to Cornwall’s historic copper landscape.

Coloured with non-toxic blue-green milk paint and finished with cold-pressed raw linseed oil.
