STEAM-BENT TRAY MAKING WORKSHOP

Make a distinctive wooden serving tray using traditional hand tools, carved texture, steam bending and simple joinery.

During the workshop, you will learn how to smooth and shape the tray board using gouges, a travisher and a spokeshave. You can then develop your own carved surface, allowing the marks of the tools to become part of the finished piece.

You will also learn the process of steam bending, forming a pair of handles before fitting them to the board with wedged round mortise-and-tenon joints. These strong mechanical joints hold the tray together without relying on hidden fixings and leave the construction visible in the finished work.

The day offers an approachable introduction to several green woodworking techniques, with guidance through each stage of the process. No previous woodworking experience is necessary, and you will leave with your own completed tray to use at home.
