Waves
Cornish beech
29 × 9 cm
Approximately 11⅜ × 3½ inches
Turned from beech that I sourced in Cornwall following Storm Goretti.
Shaped while the wood was still green, Tonnow has a smoothly turned exterior and a fluted texture carved by hand across the inside. The repeated cuts follow the changing curve of the bowl, creating a quiet rhythm reminiscent of waves moving towards the shore.
As the beech dried, tensions held within the timber were released and the bowl moved away from the perfect circle of the lathe. I see this warping as the tree continuing to express its lifetime in the landscape: the ground on which it stood, the prevailing weather and the conditions that shaped its growth.
The exterior is coloured with non-toxic blue-green milk paint, contrasting with the warm, natural beech revealed within. The bowl is finished with cold-pressed raw linseed oil.
One of six unique bowls from Duryoryon – The Survivors.
